Good Catch!

Life on the Gulf Coast summons images of sand, surf, and seafood. The latter is a mainstay on many menus around town and it is no mystery why – the selection is varied and the flavors worthy of any occasion. Unfortunately, the path from sea to plate is not always a sustainable one. This is when Seafood Awareness Month (October) plays an important role in educating consumers about sustainable seafood management. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) regulates a sustainable fisheries division to help ensure that generations to come are able to enjoy the bounty of the sea. Through their Catch Share program and enforcement of annual catch limits, the quality and quantity of healthy fish stocks important to commercial, recreational, and subsistence fisheries are grown and maintained.

Locally, third generation wholesale/retail seafood distributor Airline Seafood has a 75+ year history of supporting sustainable seafood that promotes the health of their consumers as well as the oceans’ inhabitants through partnerships with NOAA and out-of-state suppliers. Owner Stephen Berreth says Seafood Awareness Month “…is a time to highlight the benefits of a diet rich in seafood and an opportunity for our industry to highlight success and challenges in regards to sustainability. Consumers are increasingly wanting to know more about the source or origins of all of their food including seafood,” he adds. “We encourage them to ask questions and are always willing to provide information regarding where our products are sourced.”

Airline Seafood is located on 1841 Richmond Ave, Houston; 713-526-2351. Or every Saturday from 8am-noon at Urban Harvest Eastside Farmers Market.
