A Scent Mosquitoes Don’t Like

Summer was mild when it comes to mosquitoes. Lack of rain suppressed the onslaught of the high-pitched buzzing bloodsuckers, but one good heavy rain and they’re back with a vengeance. Of all the repellents out there, increasingly tested are those that are all-natural, DEET-free and scented with pure ingredients that we like, but mosquitoes don’t. One such ingredient is sweet-smelling vanilla. Yutumi is a local company that developed an all-natural bug spray formula that contains pure vanilla extract. Not only will it keep mosquitoes at bay*, the spray also doesn’t make you smell like chemical warfare when you use it on your exposed skin, or alter the taste of your food whenever you touch it with fingers that brushed with sprayed skin. Instead, there is a faint fragrance of sweet vanilla, mingling with notes of lavender or Texas cedar when you apply it. More than an all-natural, pleasant-smelling repellent, Bye-You Bug wants to help raise awareness to mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and West Nile virus. Yutumi (say it like “you to me”) donates part of its profits to Nothing But Nets (nothingbutnets.net), a worldwide organization fighting malaria.

Contact yutumi.com for more information, and how (often) to use the repellent to be effective. * I used the spray in August, when mosquitoes were not too bad, and have yet to test its effectiveness sitting outside after heavy rains.
