Schools operating under the National School Lunch Program serve meals that meet strict nutrition standards, including limits on calories, sodium and unhealthy fats. Calorie and sodium limits are set by grade level and meal, and at least half of the grains offered with school meals must be whole-grain-rich (at least 51% whole grain). In order to receive reimbursement, each school lunch served must include the following components:

• ¾ cup of vegetables;

• One cup of 1% or fat-free milk;

• Entrees must include whole grains and lean protein (or meat alternative);

• ½ cup serving of fruit daily
