Hitting the road to New Jersey!

In May 2015, the first issue of Edible Houston hit the streets with one of Lisa Seger’s sweet baby goats gracing the cover. A few weeks later, I received a handwritten note from a reader—our first letter to the publisher! The gentleman shared his distress that we were promoting eating a cute baby goat! We weren’t, but I was tempted to send him my recipe for Kid Stew.

Edible Houston is rooted in this community—telling the stories that matter, and encouraging people to cook, garden and eat local. I have published 34 issues with Editor Francine Spiering by my side. For all these years, she has been the creative brain behind each issue, a role she has started to share with David Leftwich as co-editor for the last two issues.

As of this issue, we have reached over 1.5 million readers! I am so damn proud of what we’ve accomplished. Every issue makes an impact, on the businesses and people we’ve written about, and our readers, encouraging them to think differently about food and its connection to our community. Our writers and photographers are the best of the best—bringing each story vibrantly to life.

The last two years have been devastating to our community. Doors have closed for some, which is heartbreaking—but we all know that when a door closes, somewhere a door opens. Open doors mean new possibilities, opportunities and changes. When we find those open doors, we can take a breath, step through and embrace a new adventure!

2021 brought me much sorrow and loss. My son, struggling with depression and drug use, left college. Three family members died within months of each other. Running a business was challenging, to say the least, but we persevered. 2022 started with joy and possibilities. My son spent a year at YouthReach Gulf Coast, is sober, back in school, and surrounded by people who care for him deeply and will help him succeed. We recently moved into a house in New Jersey--it was this house, left to us by my father-in-law who passed away in 2021, that opened the door to the move back to the East Coast where all our family (and framily) lives. We walked through that door and it feels so right.

Edible Houston, however, will stay rooted in this community. I am thrilled to share the news that Monique Threadgill and Ralph Yznaga, publishers of Edible Austin, have purchased Edible Houston. They will continue to tell the stories that matter to Houstonians. Edible Houston is in good hands—I ask you to embrace and support them as you have me. I am indebted to the businesses that have advertised with us over the years: Without you, this magazine would not exist.

I will miss you, the big-hearted people of Texas, and the vibrant, colorful, delicious city I called home for nearly eight years. I can’t wait to see where Edible Houston goes.

I’m not saying goodbye—I’ll see you later!

Warmly,

Kim
