When I think about summer, I drift back in time to my summers in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, walking on the beach with my mother, collecting small, white, perfectly round stones. My mother was particular about these stones. I remember when I was 8 or so, my first joyous offering of my bucket of stones turned to indignation as she matter-of-factly rejected about 95% of them. I would argue and she would point out each one’s imperfections. After the third round or so of this, I was determined—game on, Mom! I made more careful selections and brought back only those that would pass her test. I have no idea where those stones are now, but the persistence it taught me is always with me. Persistence is part of every small business owner’s DNA. Businesses are created from a passion and determination that their product or service will make a difference to people’s lives. From farmers to BBQ pitmasters to food artisans to publishers (yes, yours truly), small businesses build our community and drive our economy. I love reading our stories about the men, women and businesses working so hard to make Houston a delicious and delightful place to live. Passion and determination is the common thread in these stories.

At Edible Houston, summer is a time for planning. Our small but mighty team brainstorms about themes, guides, campaigns, membership and more. We strive to delight and educate our readers and followers by sharing food stories that matter. We’re creating and growing a community that is increasingly aware of the important food issues in Houston—and the people and businesses that are doing good things.

This dedication pays off. When someone shares with me how much they love the magazine, when someone we featured tells me the story increased their customers, when a person flipping through the magazine exclaims “I love [insert name of an advertiser]” when they see their ad, I am grateful. It means we’re doing our job right: telling the stories other publications don’t, which supports and grows our local community. We couldn’t do it without our amazing advertisers. Every advertiser allows us to tell those stories and grow our community. Please support them with your business.

And to you, dear readers, if you have been touched by a story, felt encouraged to try a new ingredient, make a seasonal recipe in your kitchen or learned something new, I would ask that you support our community by becoming a member. Your membership allows us to tell more of the stories that strengthen our local community. Plus, we have lots of fun exploring Houston together.

Stay cool, eat some BBQ and enjoy the read.
