Fukuda Sashimi Salad

It’s safe to say that everyone is looking for more ways to boost immunity and fuel their bodies. As Houstonians, we have a golden opportunity to do exactly that through what we eat. This “food is medicine” philosophy can be found in a variety of spots all over Houston. From acai bowls to sashimi salads, there is a colorful cornucopia of options available that not only are healthy but also reflect delicious diversity. Here are six of our top picks:

Fukuda
Sashimi Salad

Fukuda is a true mom-and-pop shop. This hidden gem in The Woodlands is a Cinderella story of healthy eating. Sue Chen transplanted to the States with her family from Hong Kong. They all worked in Japanese restaurants together and nearly 11 years ago opened their own space, Fukuda. Sue believes that family and food go hand in hand. The benefits of clean eating are evident in much of the traditional Japanese cuisine they serve. Not laden with heavy sauces or panko, their sashimi salad is comprised of buttery salmon and tuna amongst layers of fresh greens and Japanese citrus. Throw in an order of the Gu Takusan Miso Soup (a.k.a. grandma’s soup) and your sprit will be raised with each spoonful.

Revolucion Coffee + Juice
PB & J Acai Bowl

Revolucion Coffee + Juice began in San Antonio, but Monika Tilley decided to bring her fascination with fresh to our great city, becoming the owner and operator of the Houston chapter. Monika’s family hails from Mexico City. She grew up in a home where fresh juices were comfort food. All of their almond and cashew milks are made in-house, and the juices are cold pressed. What I love is that every ingredient has a purpose. Their most popular menu item is the PB & J Acai Bowl, understandably so. Hemp granola and organic acai make for a delightful contrast of creamy and crunchy. While it is hearty, save room for the Revolucion Latte made with lavender-infused honey. The small-but-mighty Heights location can customize a bowl with plant-based protein powder and even put the bowl components on the side for takeout.

Curry Jackfruit

ATE Kitchen/Bocage Catering
Curry Jackfruit

Chef Keisha Griggs of ATE Kitchen and Bocage Catering is a reformed marketing director who decided to leave the agency life and put on an apron. She knew she always wanted to cook food to fuel the soul, so Keisha enrolled in culinary school. Her parents were born and raised in Trinidad. As a first-generation Caribbean American, her childhood home was centered around food— growing it as well as cooking and eating it. Everyone played a part in feeding the family. Keisha’s Curry Jackfruit dish is on her roster of authentic Caribbean vegan dishes. The curry-fried jackfruit comes with vegetables and biryani rice, a nod to her West Indian heritage. On top of running her kitchen and catering company, Keisha is a professor at Baylor School of Medicine for elective cooking classes. She’s currently offering curb-side pickup for her lovely dishes and virtual healthy cooking classes for all ages.

Pondicheri
Punjabi Cauliflower

Chef Anita Jaisinghani and the team at Pondicheri are passionate about people and provenance. They believe in creating food from an environment of loving energy. Every item that graces their menu is thoughtfully sourced, many from local farms and used within two or three days of harvest. You’ll find every color of the rainbow and only healthy fats, such as ghee or olive oil. Pondicheri subscribes to the “we are what we eat” philosophy and they take that responsibility very seriously. One of the goals at Pondicheri is to gently nudge people in the direction of eating less meat. The Punjabi Cauliflower, for example, is one of their flagship vegetarian dishes. The cauliflower is roasted and then braised in a tomato masala, which intensifies the flavors. Enjoy with the quinoa pilaf to make it super powerful for the soul.

Buddha Bowl

Pat Greer’s Kitchen
Buddha Bowl

Pat Greer’s Kitchen has been a Houston healthy-eating staple for years. We know her for the raw and vegan dishes that just seem to sing to the senses. Pat is a self-proclaimed latchkey kid from Texas who grew up on canned food and soda. She wanted to explore what healthy food meant, only to discovered that plant-based diets have endless benefits. Pat’s Buddha Bowl includes roasted broccoli, sun-dried tomato, curried chickpeas, “raw-some” sweet potatoes and herbed quinoa over a bed of kale. Don’t skip the Curry On Dude Dressing. This yummy bowl of wonder is also available at Central City Co-op in the Heights.

Greens & Grain Bowl

Vibrant
Greens & Grain Bowl

Vibrant was an old Montrose dry cleaner turned beautiful, airy eatery with a touch of retro. The name itself suggests exactly what healthy eating should be: vibrant. There is something for all diets. The entire staff pitches in to collaborate, including creating new dishes, enhancing service and improving sustainability. Every dish at Vibrant is as healthy as it is beautiful, but the crown jewel is the Greens & Grain Bowl. Pair it with one of the biodynamic natural wines on the menu. Soon you’ll be able to shop from their upcoming retail line of Vibrant’s greatest hits!
