HealthCorps is a national non-profit organization, founded by Dr. Mehmet Oz, devoted to strengthening communities. They do this by highlighting innovative approaches to health and wellness to build resilience in America’s youth. In Houston alone, Sharpstown High School, Etoile Academy, Westside High School, Lamar, and Kipp High School have been or will be impacted by the organization’s dedication to nurture the whole human. In addition to healthy eating, HealthCorps’ core programming also focuses on other important life skills such as mental strength and physical activity. The HealthCorps team works in schools on a daily basis, but recently, they set out to go beyond school walls to motivate and inspire parents, educators, and the community so they can support and foster healthy lifestyle choices.

HealthCorps will host its first ever Wellness Day open to the public on September 18 at the United Way-Greater Houston. Houston will be the first stop before heading to Los Angeles and other major U.S. cities. They are bringing together the best of the wellness community for a day of experiential learning, a panel discussion, and the opportunity to discover the amazing local resources in the area.

Meet Chef Delphine Remy

As a HealthCorps ambassador, Delphine Remy was appropriately chosen to share her knowledge at the September 18 event, as the Keynote Speaker and special guest. Her philosophy mirrors the critical values of HealthCorps, and she is honored to share more about her journey in health with her lucky audience.

Eighteen years ago, Chef Delphine Remy stashed away her rigid stock broker suit for something a little more comfortable and a lot tastier! As a self-made caterer, private chef, and quiche whizz, Delphine displays her passion for cuisine with an incredible determination and joie-de-vivre! Her focus is on helping others eat and live better lives.

Houston is where it all started when Belgian-born Remy followed her husband 18 years ago to the city she now calls her second home. She fearlessly launched her career and met others who were passionate as well as crazy about the “je ne sais quoi,” or rather, the delicacy of  European culinary. Time and time again, she traveled from Houston-to-Belgium-to-Houston-to-Belgium. Today, you could even say she’s half Texan half Belgian, and just imagine the number of recipes you could explore when you fusion both cultures together!

She is eager to return to Houston for the HealthCorps’ wellness event. This is the place where she delivered homemade quiches and tarts to hundreds of people across the town, catered dinners for private and corporate clients alike, concerts and other special events. She even regularly cooked for a prominent Texan family and made sure her culinary repertoire continuously expanded, so they never had to eat the same thing twice!

Delphine’s travels and her lust for food led her to become a Holistic Nutrition and Eating Psychology specialist. Still attending events and feeding her sites and social networks with original recipes posted every day, Delphine has a long-term vision and is thinking big. There’s nothing more she wants than to help others lead healthy lives and connect with them through food.

Her love of culinary started at 15 years old she would shadow her mother in her 80s style kitchen. Magic was at the tip of her fingers, and Delphine didn’t hesitate to prepare alluring meals. Indian spices, French vanilla, and fresh Belgian cheese were only the basic ingredients of her successful career. Luckily, she used her cultural finesse to entice robust Texan taste buds. Delphine’s main motto and number one rule is, “taste and pleasure don’t have to be compromised for food to be healthy and balanced.”

Many of us know how food can be an international mediator for human connection. Just think of all the people who are sitting around a table, sharing a meal together in deep conversations. The power in joining over food has never been contested, and modernity has had a way of isolating people during these crucial moments. Delphine’s wish is to see young people realizing the importance of cooking and eating healthily and the impact it can have on their lives.

It could be considered that cooking is somewhat a dying form of art - but according to Delphine, it is often all or nothing these days. Life isn’t getting more relaxed or less busy, and there are plenty of solutions out there for meals to be eaten in 5 minutes flat. Either people grab a ready-made lunch, fast food or junk food, or they actually delve into culinary and the pleasures of cooking fresh (whether it’s under 30 minutes or not).

The point is, Delphine wants to rock that boat. She wants to make things move, and she started by creating a blog where she shares bi-weekly articles, recipes, videos and more to unravel and simplify nutrition and wellness. The simplicity and resourcefulness of her blog http://www.delphineremy.com/ is an excellent source of information, especially for those willing to start making a shift in their eating lifestyle. She has a library of at least 50 different eBooks and videos that help her readers easily integrate her teachings and recipes. Her approach to health and wellness is positive and especially, empowering - and it’s definitely different from the information found in the mainstream media.

While she focuses on empowering our youth, Delphine’s work as Ambassador for HealthCorps is to serve and strengthen our communities - one meal at a time. Join in on the goal to cultivate overall health and wellness in ourselves and our youth! You will not be disappointed.
