Buffalo Bayou Paddling - Tips & Trails
Ready to paddle Buffalo Bayou? Before you go, always remember to bring plenty of water, snacks and sunscreen. Here are some resources to help you plan your paddle:
Maps and access points
Texas Parks & Wildlife (look for Buffalo Bayou Paddling Trails). The website offers a detailed map of the 26-mile trail from Highway 6 down to Allen’s Landing, including access points along the way.
Rental
Buffalo Bayou Partnership offers river trail maps, canoe and kayak rentals and more.
Bayou City Adventures offers paddle training in addition to canoe and kayak rentals.
Trash
Our bayous are plagued by trash. Aesthetics aside, trash harms habitats, transports chemical pollutants and threatens aquatic and other wildlife.
Buffalo Bayou Partnership has been running a Green & Clean program since 2012. They use a multitude of actions to combat and collect trash from the bayou, including containment booms, nets, long-handled rakes, and the hard work of volunteers. BBP also uses its custom-built BioVac, a “part boat, part vacuum” device that allows crews to suck trash out of the water and into the boat for proper disposal.
Bayou Preservation Association campaigns for trash-free bayous through outreach and education, building understanding about where trash originates and how it ends up in our waterways, as well as regular volunteer cleanup efforts, including Trash Bash. Check out their Trash-Free Bayous Program.
