Get to Know Pollinators with Edible Houston
Join us on Sunday, March 24 at Wabash Feed & Garden as we bring the pages of our Early Spring issue to life with a hands-on event covering all things Pollinators, native plants and urban gardening.
The event is from 3-6 PM at Wabash Feed & Garden, 4537 N. Shepherd Dr., Houston 77018
Ms. Lauren Simpson, pollinator-conservation advocate and creator of St. Julian's Crossing, an urban wildlife habitat, will talk about what pollinators are and why they are important to our local ecosystem. She will then guide attendees through the Wabash garden section discussing native plants and why each is key in the attraction and survival of different pollinators (i.e. butterflies, bees, etc.)
Once armed with pollinator and native plant knowledge, Rooted Garden will lead attendees in a discussion about raised beds. Folks will learn all you need to know about beds that are suitable for everything from small urban yards to expansive rural settings.
Of course we will have bites and drinks and the Wabash team will be on site to answer any questions and help you purchase plants + necessary gardening materials to head home and plant a native garden for our Houston-area Pollinators.
About Lauren Simpson:
Since early 2015, Lauren Simpson has spent her spare time transforming her Houston home gardens into a pollinator-friendly habitat, currently a Certified Wildlife Habitat (National Wildlife Federation), a Monarch Waystation (Monarch Watch, Waystation No. 10925), and a Certified Butterfly Garden (North American Butterfly Association). She promotes pollinator conservation and wildscaping through state and local presentations, local events, interviews, and an educational Facebook community entitled “St. Julian’s Crossing-wildlife habitat" – the name adopted for her family’s Monarch Waystation. Ms. Simpson is a member of the Houston Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT) and the North American Butterfly Association, and she actively volunteers in her neighborhood gardening group, the Oak Forest Community of Gardeners. She has received the Level 1 certification through the NPSOT Native Landscape Certification Program (NLCP); serves on the NPSOT subcommittee for NLCP Level 4; and has taken the "Train the Trainer" Monarch Conservation Workshop, sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation.
